Three Chosen Thumbnails - Developing Book Cover Design Ideas
I chose three of my favourite thumbnail drawings, each depict a sense of symbolism connected with the book rather than a key character, scene or setting. I decided to make my cover design more abstract and conceptual because I think it will reflect the nature of the book better, it could be described as quite a deep and emotive book. I believe the emotional factor projected by the book is stronger than the storytelling elements. I also thought it would be unique and different to create an image that isn't as obvious in representing what the book is about in the hope it will appear more to a contemporary readership. For the thumbnails, I only did drawings so will need to add text in the form of the title of the book, 'Noughts and Crosses' and the author's name, 'Malorie Blackman'.
For thumbnail 75, I created a drawing of a knotted hanging rope with 3 tiny teardrops inside the 'teardrop' shape created by the tied rope. The hanging rope represents the fact that two of the characters in the book get hung. They were both 'nought' men. The three teardrops get smaller as they reach the bottom of the cover, they represent Sephy's tears for the death of Callum. He is hung after he is captured for kidnapping Sephy and ordered to death by the Crosses government. Sephy is pregnant with Callum's baby at the time.
For thumbnail 73, I created a drawing of two friendship infinity bracelets. Callum and Sephy have a close friendship even though in the society they live in, they shouldn't be friends. Sephy hopes that herself and Callum will get closer when Callum starts at her school but 'noughts' are always treated as lower within the hierarchy of their society. The friendship bracelets are drawn as if they are fastened to the book cover. On the back cover, I would draw the rest of the bracelets so they join together. The infinity symbol also represents no boundaries, time or space has no end. This could suggest that Callum and Sephy will always have their friendship, no matter what happens.
For thumbnail 94, I created drawings of tree trunk bases. There is a key theme within the book that takes place in a forest setting so I decided to depict this in a more abstracted way. I chose to draw the tree trunk bases rather than tree trunks or trees as a whole because I think they loosely represent nought and cross symbols. The trunk bases tend to be round and often have marks engraved into them that could be in cross shapes.
I aim to create a cover that doesn't obviously showcase nought and cross symbols so I think this is an effective way of doing that.
I now need to draw each design larger, adding text and playing around with composition until I come up with one final design that I am pleased with.
